Moments d’intenses émotions au Jardin de Pamplemousses ce matin quand après avoir déposé des gerbes et rendu hommage à Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam et sir Anerood Jugnauth, le Premier ministre indien a mis en terre une plante.

Cette démarche se situe dans le cadre de Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative ou plus de 27,500 plantes ont été mises en terre dans 136 pays avec le Premier ministre indien participant personnellement à Maurice et lors de sa visite en Guyane.

PM Modi pays tribute to Seewoosagur Ramgoolam and Anerood Jugnauth in Mauritius

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his official visit to Mauritius, began his engagements by paying homage to two towering figures in the nation’s history—Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the founding father and first Prime Minister of Mauritius, and Sir Anerood Jugnauth, former President and Prime Minister.

 Upon his arrival, PM Modi was accorded a grand welcome by the Mauritian leadership at the airport, followed by a warm reception from the Indian diaspora at his hotel. His first official stop was the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Port Louis, where he laid a wreath at the memorial of Ramgoolam, a leader often credited with steering Mauritius toward independence.

 The botanical garden, formerly known as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Pamplemousses, was renamed in September 1988 on the 88th birth anniversary of Ramgoolam, who also served as the Governor-General of Mauritius. As a mark of respect, PM Modi, alongside his Mauritian counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam, also paid tribute to Sir Anerood Jugnauth, who played a key role in shaping the modern political and economic landscape of Mauritius.

 Strengthening Environmental Commitments

During the visit, PM Modi and PM Ramgoolam participated in a tree-planting ceremony at the botanical garden under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam initiative. The leaders planted an Aegle Marmelos tree, commonly known as the wood apple or Bael.

 The Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, launched by PM Modi on World Environment Day in June 2024, integrates environmental responsibility with a heartfelt tribute to mothers. The initiative has already led to the planting of over 1 billion trees in India and has extended its reach globally, with more than 27,500 trees planted across 136 countries. PM Modi himself has taken part in tree plantation drives in two countries outside India, including Mauritius.

 Speaking about the campaign, PM Modi has emphasized the importance of collective action for environmental conservation and highlighted India’s strides in increasing forest cover over the past decade. He has consistently advocated for sustainable development as a global priority.

 Celebrating Cultural Ties

PM Modi also acknowledged the deep cultural bonds between India and Mauritius, particularly the enduring influence of the Bhojpuri language.

 In a post on X, he said, “Memorable welcome in Mauritius. One of the highlights was the deep-rooted cultural connect, seen in the Geet-Gawai performance. It’s commendable how the great Bhojpuri language thrives in the culture of Mauritius.”

 Over the course of his visit, PM Modi is set to hold discussions with Mauritian leaders, address a community program, and participate as the Chief Guest at Mauritius’ 57th National Day celebrations.
