L’ancien PM Britannique sévèrement critiqué pour son attitude sur ce dossier.

« Boris Johnson est une personnalité infecte!» a déclaré Pravind Jugnauth lors de la commémoration de la déportation des Chagossiens, observée hier, vendredi 3 novembre au Quai C, au port. Il a accusé Boris Johnson de n’avoir pas tenu ses engagements envers Maurice et les institutions internationales en égratignant au passage le gouvernement britannique.

Pravind Jugnauth a rappelé comment Boris Johnson lui avait posé un lapin après lui avoir donné rendez-vous au Sommet du Commonwealth au Rwanda en 2022 pour discuter de la question de souveraineté de Maurice sur les Chagos. «Ou réalise ou ene Premier ministre britannique donne ene parole après li pas tenir so parole. Grace à mo persévérance mo ti réussi zoine li et premier zaffaire li dire c’est ki distance ena entre Maurice ek Chagos, mo premier réaction mo ti pose li la question ki distance ena entre Londres ek Chagos. Cest pour sa mo dire li ene personnalité infect» a fait ressortir le Premier ministre dans son discours devant la communauté Chagossienne.

On se rappellera que dans une tribune parue dans le Daily Mail le 22 septembre dernier, l’ancien Premier ministre du Royaume-Uni, Boris Johnson avait prétendu détenir des informations d’un informateur concernant un ‘done deal’ pour que la Grande Bretagne rétrocède l’archipel des Chagos à Maurice.

Boris Johnson s’est farouchement opposé à cette démarche et avait lancé un appel au Premier ministre actuel, Rishi Sunak, pour mettre fin à ce processus. “Ceding control of the Chagos group would be a colossal mistake”, a t-il insisté.

Boris Johnson avait donné quatre raisons pour appuyer ses dires notamment à l’effet que les Chagos sont très éloignés de Maurice sans toutefois mentionner que la distance entre le Royaume Uni et l’archipel est de 9000 km.

“The US-UK relationship, as we all know, is caring and sharing and loving — but also ruthlessly transactional; and this archipelago matters to that relationship. Since 1967 these 58 tiny volcanic islands have contained a large military base, on a 17 square mile atoll called Diego Garcia. Ring any bells now? Yes — it’s that Diego Garcia, the place from which US forces deploy to the Gulf and many other destinations” a t-il également écrit.

Toutefois la position de Boris Johnson ne fait pas l’unanimité en Grande-Bretagne car dans un autre article d’opinion écrit par Peter Harris dans The Diplomat du 26 Septembre, ce dernier avait démoli les arguments de l’ancien Premier ministre britannique.

“In any case, bare geographic nearness is no basis for deciding rival claims to

sovereignty. Johnson should be careful about having it otherwise. After all, if distance is what counts in such matters, how can Britain justify its other Overseas Territories, which including the far-flung Falkland Islands (closer to Argentina), Gibraltar (next door to Spain), and the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia on the island of Cyprus?” a dénoncé Peter Harris.

“Next, Johnson pointed out that the Chagos Archipelago “has never been run by Mauritius.” This is technically accurate, but only because Britain is guilty of illegally detaching the Chagos group from the Colony of Mauritius in 1965 prior to that territory’s emergence as an independent state in 1967.

Indeed, that the separation of the Chagos Archipelago from Mauritius was unlawful is precisely the basis for the Mauritian legal claim over the islands – a position upheld in an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in 2019. In other words, Johnson used the fact of a crime having been committed as justification for the crime’s commission. That’s hardly a compelling argument” a ajouté l’éditorialiste de The Diplomat.

Peter Harris avait également balayé d’un revers de main les insinuations de Boris Johnson à l’effet que la Chine serait derrière la réclamation de souveraineté de Maurice sur les Chagos : «Third, Johnson insinuated that China is behind the Mauritian plot to assume control over the Chagos Islands. Other Conservative MPs like Daniel Kawczynski and Iain Duncan Smith have made these intimations before. It is a canny rhetorical move, given the strength of anti-China feeling that exists across the West. But there is simply no truth to the idea that Beijing is behind the Mauritian bid to regain the Chagos Islands. Nobody – not Johnson, nor Kawczynski, nor Duncan Smith, nor anyone else – has ever presented even a shred of evidence to support this accusation. Nor is there any credible suggestion that China is eyeing a base of its own in the Chagos Islands, or that Mauritius would be interested in hosting such an installation. These are nothing more than scurrilous rumors and innuendos. It’s a particularly ugly example of China-bashing, as the intended impact is both to negate Mauritian agency and to justify continued colonization of the Chagos Islands to suit British and American geopolitical aims”.
