Saturday 30th September 2023 was a day to remember for the Vaghjee family, friends of the Meteological Station of Vacoas and for all Mauritians, as the Flamboyant Club in the presence of Hon Dr Angiv Ramdhany,  Minister of Public Service, Administrative and Institutional Reforms paid due homage to late Mr Ranjitrai Vaghjee. For many of us, he was Mr Météo but for his three daughters, he was a passionate Dad with a great heart.

Indeed, let us nevertheless say a few words on this Man of All Seasons. His intelligence and his tenacity illuminate the traits that Ranjitrai Ranchhordas Vaghjee, PDSM, was known for through decades in the weather department, retiring as the Director of the Met Services in 2000. His curriculum vitae is impressive-inter alia, he held a BSc Physics and an MSc Meteorology from University of London and a Post Graduate Diploma from Imperial College of Science and Technology. He relished a solid and passionate three decades career while in parallel undertaking research on climate change and in cognate fields for the benefit of our country.

Our research shows that this noble and loving dad taught three girls how to be brave, work hard and find joy in simple things in life. He was blessed that his daughters are fully qualified academics holding PhDs and are now actively serving in the Training and Education fields and proudly honouring him. He was a loving father figure and role model to his three daughters and son-in-law. What is not known for many of us was his remarkable contribution also to culture and society. As a pioneer founder member of Club Flamboyant, he excelled in different tasks and participated with great humility and was endowed with a high sense of service to others as he did as Mr Méteo. Being recognised for his dedication and valuable contribution to the club as Vice President and pioneer founder member, in itself condenses the essence of a passionate man.

It was in this context that the eldest daughter, Dr Tehjal Vaghjee Rajiah, in her tribute speech to her ‘Daddy’ emphasised that it was more than a mere collection of words or recollections of shared moments, lessons and memories. It was a deeply personal expression of respect, love, admiration, and a commemoration of the poignant bond between a father and daughter.

We noted that Tehjal explained how a father holds a very special place in a daughter’s heart. This feeling is shared by her two sisters, Dr Havisha Vaghjee and Dr Gounshali Vaghjee. We could perceive how father- daughter bond is unique, imbued with mutual respect, shared trust and an unspoken understanding that spans the decades.

Mr Ranjitrai Ranchhordas Vaghjee…a Dad…a loving husband, a teacher…Mr Météo, backbone, life mentor ,  friend of his daughters and a servant- leader in meteorogical services..has joined his better half, loyal companion of almost 5 decades, late Mrs Kantee Vaghjee, in February 2020 in the ultime abode…

The 3 daughters always remember their Dad for eveything he did.

That special smile,

That caring heart,

That warm embrace,

That concern for their education and development,

That he gave them with grace.

Dr Tehjal also saluted that one remarkable aspect-

Her Dad always being there,

For Mum and the three daughters,

Through good and hard times, amidst different seasons,

For the Vaghjee sisters, they always remember their Dad because there shall never be another one to replace him in their hearts and the endless love they always have for him.

Now Mr Météo as most people know him is the GUARDIAN ANGEL of Tehjal Vaghjee Rajiah, Vivek Rajiah, Havisha Vaghjee and Gounshali Vaghjee.
